	The Hon Peter Garrett, AM MP Minister for Environment, Heritage and the Arts Parliament House Canberra ACT 2600 Dear Mr Garrett, Coral Sea - important to achieve a sustainable balance The Coral Sea is an important and integral part of the lives of many people from Australia and around the world. Achieving a sustainable balance in its use and conservation is important both now and in the future to ensure a healthy, resilient and productive Coral Sea ecosystem that is available for all to share and enjoy. I support an open, fair and transparent process in which management decisions can be made about the Coral Sea region which recognises the rights and roles of all stakeholders. I am opposed to the current attempt by certain extreme environmental groups to circumvent normal consultation processes and apply a blanket ban on all fishing activities in the region. I support management arrangements which recognise and maintain recreational and charter fishing as legitimate, sustainable and economically important activities within the region. While I support the concept of multiple use marine areas which provide for a balance in the recreational, commercial, conservation and cultural needs of the area, I am opposed to a plan which involves the extension of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park as a management alternative to the region.
